If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things

Can you count the different types of silence?

Such a futile exercise proves useful – once.
For the lesson it delivers is that there are more types of silence than all the raindrops in a monsoon torrent.
The warm silky sheen of a tropical downpour.
The hearty rhythmic rinse of a British upland April shower.

In the end, counting is a game that detracts from the opportunity of learning to experience the umbilical essence of this ephemeral treat.
This inverted beat.
Can you intuit the moon-washed textures of silence that slide softly up against the edges of daily life?
Sudden as reflex or announced like thunder.
Nuanced as sunsets. Stealthy as cats.
What is the shape of the space we call wonder?

Perhaps you have been swimming her deep-lock waters for years without knowing.

Can you come to know her, then?
Can you bow to the qualities of her unending benevolence or follow the arc of her poetry, curvaceous and bountiful?
What will it take to build a deep-seated, lifelong, loving relationship with this wise old maker of heart-music?
Eternal yet fleeting. Constant yet coy.

Is silence tame or wild?

When she calls to you in a voice beyond sound, in a language beyond words, how do you feel?

She cannot be glimpsed.
She won’t form herself into handy packets that can be marketed, exchanged, stored and played, conjured, summoned, paused and rewound for the convenience of this modern world.
This hedonic form-addicted shopping cart, stacked up and hurled.
Her infinite truth is not for sale to the highest bidder in the markets of this manifest illusion.

She’s not cheap like trophies.
She’s expensive as water.
Life is her offspring. The emptiness, her daughter.

Does silence exist behind noise?
Patiently waiting for you to put down your toys?
And when you do let her in.
When you kneel, hands-cupped at her shores, tapping her cool reserve, how does she instruct?
What is her value?
What dish has she cooked?

How do you sing a song of silence?

What is the currency of intuition?
What does peace sound like to you?
Walk away from noise to meet the gentle hold of ceasefires, the wrap-around warmth of trust, the soldier-blue skies of hope and the plump, silhouette covers of replenishing sleep.

Are we even fit to speak of her?
Isn’t the very contemplation of silence a schoolboy error?
A clumsy trespass. A naive annihilation.
Can the cacophony of thought and our spoken language deliver us into her arms – a map pointing to the treasure marked X?
Or are we bound, this way, to be cast farther out from the exalted gardens of her veiled emporium?
Her rivers of wisdom. Her timeless sugar-spun fields.

Are we chasing rainbows now?

What is prayer but listening for her and listening to her?
Drinking deep and often from the well of her shimmering golden instruction.
Rejoicing in her simplicity. Submitting to her induction.

Silent is listen rearranged.

How can it be that, in this knowledge economy, in our fervent addiction to our version of education, we have forgotten to ask for her Princess teachings?

Haven’t you noticed how nobody speaks of remarkable things?
Of valour and fraternity?
Of the comfort of doubt and the strength of vulnerability and the glory of mystery.
The signal truth of dreams. The opulent bedrock of intuition.
The freedom of loss. The honour of sickness.
The goodness of failure. The gift of pain.
The joy of death.
The satiety of the void. The wholeness of space.
The complete rounded finish of imperfection.
Of meaning and purpose and the wide-smile wink of the unknown.
Of questions that demand to remain gracefully unanswered.
The unharvested sewn.

Why do cells divide?

Haven’t you noticed what she has taken back?
Naked and steeped in self, we hide.

How come you’re so busy thinking yet you never think of her?
Are you too young for her age? Are you too clever for her sagacity?
Too cynical for her mage?  Too abundant for her capacity?

Silence is not quietness.
You don’t get to get her merely by behaving like a scolded child.

Our ancient blue planet groans in her tongues as it spins.
The vibration-hum of its energy field falls on the deaf ears of weary encumbered souls.
We are too busy. We are elsewhere.
Our feet near the soil but our minds on distant futures mapped out in targets and goals.
The tomorrow years.

Our tunnel-track-desires we call ambition and wear as gloves.
Appetites we call hunger. Pleasures we call happiness.
Needs we call loves.

Have we not grown too important, too engrossed, too indulgent, too masterful to offer up the only thing she asks of us – the humility of reverence?

She’s not in the mirrors. Devoid of resemblance.

Silence laughs loudest.
Our noise could be her vengeance.

Yet she won’t forsake those who beckon her entrance.

The Liminal Space

The Liminal Space

Stillness

A daily place I go to orientate. Tumbleweed silence. Fresh deep pools of nothing-at-all swirling heavily in my midst. There’s no bed for ego and vanity here. Those jailbreak twins need neon and attentional eyes. Starved and blinded, they soon hobble off into lostness. This leaves me. Decoupled and ready to dock. The preliminaries end. An engagement of sorts is in the offing. A sort of homecoming.

Togetherness

There needn’t be words nor elegant buckle-down rituals. We can stand, devoid of a premise - clean out of ostensible props. There needn’t even be acknowledgement if we are so inclined. Our simple proximation of being is all. When I enter the room and you are already in it. And the first three seconds pass - that window when my charged momentum of entry gives license for either of us to bolt - and neither of us do. Now shimmers the dull electricity of our pairing.

There’s the tether. We live to be together.

Detachment

Where do I start and end ? If I don’t know, how can I not merge into every concern and cause that begs of my support ? How can I not fall hard at the feet of the tall quiet man I have waited for ? I want to help but what if I drown in sacrifice ? I long to play but what if I hide in joy ? I yearn to love but what if I shrivel in need ?

I turn to the road and the road speaks up. “All attachments are but stations on this journey. Keep moving Gary. Change is uncomfortable and necessary. Life is your hoard. Growth is your shield and your sword.”

I get it whole. I set the pace. Rooted in the shifting sands of sequence.

Married to the liminal space.

Sounds Like a Poem

Schemies waive the working world

And dance on poverty’s plight

Police put cameras in the lift cars

Sounds like a poem that I would write

Dawn raids drown in dub house disco

Eyes dilated from drugs and fright

Children playing in cool oblivion

Like everything’s alright

Rainwater runs down classroom windows

Streaks that bathe in the late sunlight

Young mums gather on sharp street corners

Tear away dogs that bite

Weather worn men with BetFred pens

Tense up as the racing pack takes flight

Laundromat ladies swimming in bedsheets

Washing everything white

Gun-metal beams announce the moon

To silhouette gangs just out of sight

Briskly building walls of shadow

From coconut shafts of light

Trailer park kids mark skills with skids

In the dreadnought deep of Saturday night

Catcalls ricochet through the subways

Shrill graffiti

Urban might

Everyone nods

They know my name

I’m shaping up safe and sound and tight

Few now quiz my fading accent

Nobody picks a fight

All these souls will line the pews

Of the precinct church that sleeps tonight

Nine hours hence we’ll sing low hymns

And ancient wisdoms cite

Market stalls will line the streets

With colours and smells of pure delight

Kids run slalom through the boxes

Everyone here’s polite

Media hacks will call our town

In a bid to hurt and disunite

It never works

It makes us stronger

Sounds like a poem that I should write

When the English Summer Rolls In

Once each year

The sun breaks clear

Of the cloud that clutters our skies

Great British leisure

Is a belt of high pressure

Make hay where the warm front lies!

Hear the field-birds singing

Hear the church bells ringing

As the cricket ball pitches in spin

Watch the fern trees swaying

See the children playing

When the English summer rolls in

Neighbours gather over hedges

Lovers make pledges

Gamblers win

It’s a heat-haze dope

Like a tangible hope

When the English summer rolls in

Dogs chase buses

A policeman fusses

You can see his patience wear thin

Park life’s a bustle

Icecream vans hustle

When the English summer rolls in

Families clamour

For seaside glamour

Let promenade strolls begin!

Watch the marching bands

While milling on the sands

When the English summer rolls in

Blink and you’ll miss it

No time to elicit

Long plans for a season of sin

You can see for miles

When the weatherman smiles

When the English summer rolls in

You couldn't fair better

My word, to the letter

Than be lost to the populous din

Of a country house glen

With my fellow countrymen

When the English summer rolls in

Palestinian Children

or “Tears of The Galilee”

from Rhyme Without Reason by Gary Knapton

How many night-sky stars shine out in hope that this might cease ?

How much closer are we to the prize of living in peace ?

How many people still believe once wars have taken their tolls ?

Thousands of innocent people maimed and dying by the Dead Sea Scrolls

How many walls go tumbling when the bombs fall from above ?

How many dreams are crumbling through the eye of a storm of love ?

How many mouths shot silent ?

How many eyes to see ?

Palestinian children share your tears of the Galilee

How long we been neighbours ?

Yet how little do we care ?

Focused on our differences

Yet blind to the path we share

So many Mosques and Temples

Don’t you find it odd

That we would sooner kill each other than share in the fruits of God ?

Can’t we take a new approach ?

How can it hurt to try ?

How much possibility hangs low in the Jericho sky ?

Suicide bombers and soldiers

Are robbing us of our namesake

How many more miles sleepwalking before we are blown awake ?

How many houses tumble when we bomb our cities in hate ?

How many more lives crumble by the old Jerusalem gate ?

How many hearts fall silent ?

Why can’t anyone see ?

Palestinian children share your tears of the Galilee

PLO and Hamas mask enemies from within

Rocket shells on the Golan Heights

Another bombardment din

Every innocent loses

Jews and Arabs alike

All our brothers and sisters

Fear death from the next airstrike

Human beings are vulnerable

Human beings are fools

Too many men with power not love are making money and rules

Meanwhile back in Disneyland we parody the Burlesque stall

While they starve and suffer in the shade of a Berlin-esque wall

How much more pain rumbles ?

People cannot breathe

How the wealthy grumble from the towers of Tel Aviv

All the world is guilty in its quest for a Holy grail

Deaf to the lesson loud and clear from a nearby Crucifix nail

Open Your Eyes; or "your mathematical chance"

a poem by me from a collection entitled Rhyme-Scheme Lizards

when he died

when told she loved you

how did you feel inside ?

walking along with the inexplicable

running from the quiz you hide

science is cool

but science can’t help

your unprogrammable search

building, testing new hypotheses

grew too big for it’s church

nights are thickets

sun-spun coteries

rife with dreams to enhance

the neural crux of sleeping reverie

your true manifest stance

days are tickets

you’re His lottery

life is a numbers dance

the sum total of hours, minutes, seconds

your mathematical chance

venetia burney says

nothing will change when everything changes

nothing is certain

i know

you’re off chasing new horizons

i pretend to lie low

you went zoom past mars and jupiter

knowing what we can’t see

my head’s visiting darker galaxies

i’m discovering me

did you say hi to titan and phoebe

on your saturn monsoons ?

did you make friends with hip

neptunians

dancing all over their moons ?

take my hand and let me come with you

show me the magic of space

you’re my star

i'll be your satellite

orbiting all of your grace

let’s spin out on anti-gravity

i have planetary needs

take a world each and meet in the middle

hubble knows where this leads

me on hydra

you on kerberos

where do you think we’ll go ?

halfway up a range of liquid mountains

covered in nitrogen snow
